Using the Oracle

One recommended approach to the Free Hands Oracle is to use it as a mirror, showing you something you already know but just can’t see, rather than an external force predicting a force of destiny. It can be a way for you–the questioner–to see a situation or yourself from a different perspective. Whether one chooses to call that perspective the subconscious, Higher Power, the Universe, Chance…The Divine Wow, it really doesn’t matter. If you approach using the oracle with an open mind, a loving heart and healthy inquiry, while journaling your results, see if, over time, the oracle begins to speak to you more clearly, leading you toward your own Inner Truth. If not, after giving it a fair time to speak to you, try adjusting your approach or take some time away.

A suggested method to using the oracle to reflect upon a particular question or situation would be to find oneself in a quiet, sacred place without distraction. On an uncluttered surface, divide the cards in 3 decks:

A) The 22 Atus/Trumps/Lames (Numbered 0-XXI);

B) The 16 Elemental Cards;

C) The 2 Spiral Cards (Inward/Outward).

Hold in the mind a question for which you are seeking reflection or guidance. For instance, “How can I bring my best self to this day, for the benefit of all beings?”

Once this question is posed, first shuffle deck B for a time, holding the question, picking the word or phrase that resonates most with you in your question. For instance,  “My Best Self”. Now count out one card for each letter of your word or phrase, ending with the last word, turn over that card. This will be the Signifier, the card that best represents the energy you are bringing to the situation or question.

Now taking Deck A, use the same method to choose a card as you did previously, but perhaps choosing a different word or phrase, such as “Your Will For Me” or “Your Will”, count 7 cards from the top and turn over the 7th card, this will be the Voice of the Oracle. This is the archetype to work with and the message for how to approach the question or situation. Consult the divinatory meanings of the card until you are familiar and can intuitively read the message the oracle is expressing.

Finally, taking Deck C, shuffle and turn over whenever you are so moved.  If the card indicates inward, the recommended action is to conserve energy and reflect; if it indicates outward, the recommendation is to expand energy and engage.

After spending time with this method, begin to incorporate the I-Ching as well and see what new dimensions this brings to your inquiry.

As you outgrow this basic approach and become more familiar with the oracle, experiment as inspired with other methods.
